The prequel to another game? I had no clue what the actual story behind the action was at any point while I played, doing tedius chores designed apparently to be done just because someone told me to do them and everything must be as complicated as possible (again, unfathomably). I think it was supposed to be like Myst--it reminded me of that game--only this one left off an actual story or plot...or frankly purpose.. I bought this because it was dirt cheap and while Adventure Company games usually aren't amazing, they're pretty entertaining. I like the puzzle based games, but they're always better when there is at least a decent story line. The story in this is very weak and like other reviews I read, it's very much a Myst ripoff. There are NPCs in the game who give you hints, but they tell you a clue for how to complete a task and then sit dumbly by while you go to do something in an overly complicated manner (like two-part puzzle to open a door). After a number of hours, I wasn't sure what the goal of the game was anymore. When the game finally crashed after I solved something, I was done.. I'll start by saying the Myst series is one of my favorites of all time. However, while this game more or less ganked stuff right out of the series, this did very little to reel me in. I got Riven vibes up the wazoo from the very first part of the game, right down to the soundtrack. There's really something just so beautifully nostalgic about that gonging bell sound. So I was optimistic going in and I honestly really enjoyed the first batch of puzzles a lot, even though I was immediately put off by the inclusion of 3D modeled people\/NPCs. Liiiittle bit too uncanny valley. But then things kind of slid downhill for me from there, and rather than relishing the Myst series similarities, I started resenting them for not living up to the standard. It felt like Riven, Exile, and End of Ages were all mashed hopelessly together and created a little bit of an inconsistent mess. And the mysterious atmosphere was totally lost to the addition of a visible player character and relatively populated areas. I feel it would have benefited more by sticking to deserted locations with minor outside interaction, but that could just be a preference.Pros: -Nostalgic vibes-Nice soundtrack (one track in the beginning sounds straight out of an 80s fantasy movie and I LOVE it)-Good puzzles-Beautiful environmentsCons:-Unclear and contrived story. What lore we're given is rushed and unimportant, giving us nothing to use when we need to discern our next step.-Horrifying character models that really just don't hold up.-TERRIBLE voice acting. Like, truly just awful. -Certain things are complicated needlessly. You finally shake an item free of where it's lodged then are forced to find it where it fell on the floor, and it was absolutely hidden from you on purpose. Why. -Certain necessary items you need to pick up and use are not super visible or apparent so you can easily get stuck, which forces you to literally scour every inch of ground you've already walked just in case you missed something.-It is rarely made clear what you're supposed to do next after completing one line of puzzles since you're able to draw nothing from context. It gets particularly annoying in the Na-Tiexu section where the little orphan children are. At no point are you given instruction of any kind other than "make the bird sing" for which you are given no indication that you've done this successfully. -Super abrupt ending with elements that are confusing and make no sense, but that ties more in with Con #1The Rivenesque feel to things did count for a lot with me, Riven being my top favorite in the Myst series, but overall it wasn't enough to compensate for the negative points. At $4.99 you're certainly not breaking the bank buying this game, but even so, I'd still recommend you buy on sale if you buy at all.. If you have a life-threatening need for a puzzle game, and this is available to you for free, sure, take it. The game is a passable myst-alike for a while, though the puzzles aren't communicated as well as they can be. By the third world, it has devolved into little more than a hidden-object point-and-click, and often you need to complete pointless conversations before you can even attempt puzzles. The acting is sub-par at its best, and cringe-worthy at worst, with what little plot is explained seeming to be a simple macguffin search with no real purpose. The ending is utterly unsatisfying, though the cutscenes are often very prettily animated. If you want an old, myst-alike, but are usually better with point-and-click adventures, this may work for you, but it's not a worthwhile purchase under any circumstances.. This game is 14 years old (in 2018) so my expectations weren't that high regarding the quality of the graphics. I still expected to be able to enjoy playing "Aura: Fate of Ages" since I believe I would still enjoy playing the original "Myst", despite its legacy graphics and age. I immensely enjoyed playing "Myst" back in the day and like adventure/puzzle games a lot, so my dissatisfaction with "Aura: Fate of the Ages" does not stem from not being held by the hand or hard puzzles. One big problem with "Aura: Fate of Ages" is that the story is not motivating at all. It is presented in a fragmented manner leaving many unanswered gaps. For some reason, characters in the game help you but only to a very limited extent, leaving you to figure out the hard parts yourself. Why? There is nothing in the game that suggests that you are subjected to a test of skills, or similar. Another problem is the game's interaction design. I don't mind a click-and-transport style -- it can actually be more efficient to quickly zap through areas instead of having to walk through them in real time -- but the navigational control is frustrating. The target click areas are sometimes insanely small and in non-intuitive locations. Instead of being able to click at a door in the distance, for instance, one has to click away from it first then back again, etc. Also, sadly, there are some hidden items which require one to have a full 360° view around one's location with respect to two axes (left/right & up/down). There aren't many such locations but because they do exist, one basically has to do a full scan at every location. This is not fun and puts a lot of onus on the player just because of a very small number of locations where this is required.Sometimes one runs into puzzles which are operational but not yet relevant. The problem is that one receives no indication about such not-yet-relevant puzzles, meaning that one can easily spend a considerable amount of time trying to get a response out of a puzzle, only to discover later that it was't quite time yet to interact with this particular puzzle. Many puzzles don't make much real world sense. There are very elaborate contraptions that only serve a very narrow purpose; one lever has multiple effects in a way one would never expect from a real lever, etc. Not all, but many of the puzzles were not organically integrated into a plausible world. In one instance, one has to use an item for a purpose that it is totally unsuitable for and on top of that, the item is hidden in a world where it is incredibly hard to spot. I believe 90% of players would get stuck here without using a guide and as soon as one has to resort to such means, I feel that the game has failed as one isn't able to maintain a sense of immersion anymore. I didn't find the graphics to be too bad; ironically, the pre-rendered animations look worse than the normal game play, when maxing out the game's resolution (1600x1200). I did suffer from an interface problem, though, which made the right mouse button unreliable. This made accessing inventory items, and in particular leaving the inventory mode, a frustrating experience at times. At least the game ran under Windows 10 once I found a page that explained that one has to run it in "Windows XP SP3" compatibility mode. I didn't find the soundtrack to be a strong part of the game. The worst aspect of the sound design was that the ambient sounds sometimes included sound events such as someone knocking or a sound effect that appeared to signify that something important has happened, yet these sound effects are all randomly generated. This can be distracting, but worse, misleading when playing with a puzzle and believing one made some kind of breakthrough when in reality just a random sound was played. I don't want to be unfair to older games, but I don't think the problems with "Aura: Fate of Ages" are caused by its age. If a modern game, with modern graphics, had the same issues, I would not like them either. Overall, I'd say only hardcore puzzlers who want to cover as many puzzle games as possible should engage with "Aura: Fate of Ages". It has some very decent puzzles after all, if only they were integrated in a plausible world and accessible with a better interaction design.. Picked it up in Humble Bundle, finished the first few areas, didn't have the will to carry on. Voice acting is bad, animations are bad, puzzles are interesting for a little while, I guess.. great game .. In the hallways of the ancients, the Keepers have existed forever.'The legend also claims that whoever unites these rings with the artifacts of the parallel worlds will achieve great power and immortality. In unique worlds of dreams and reality, magical, mechanical and ethereal lands, take on the quest to find the artifacts cleverly concealed throughout the lands. A lot of people complained about this game being too much like Myst, that's what made me decide to get it and I'm glad I listened!... The ambient sounds, music, puzzles, and overall atmosphere of the game feels very much like the old Myst series. It really is very much the same and like a continuation of Myst. So, if Myst doesn't sell you on this game then you should pass it up. But at the $4.99 sale price that I paid for it - IT'S A STEAL! ;). Dont buy.whatever you do! DONT BUY!
